In August 2018 SMC Standard Metallurgical Co. started up the greenfield steelmaking plant supplied by Danieli and consisting of a 40-t DC EAF, 40-t LMF, 2-strand continuous caster for billets, and the related fume treatment plant.
The facility will produce up to 260,000 Tpy of billets to feed the existing rolling mill to produce hot-rolled wire rod and rebars.
The plant is designed with Full-Island configuration mode and Semi-Island configuration, with integrated local power generation.
In the latter configuration the steelmaking plant and its local generation are synchronous with the external HV network, which behaves as a slack node, as it can receive or supply electric energy to the plant.
The SMC plant is a step forward and first-of-a-kind plant, resulting from the combination of competencies of Danieli with SMC.
The technology developed allows the installation of an electric steel melt shop even in cases of very weak electrical networks or even without any electrical infrastructure (full islanded configuration), thus satisfying the increasing demand for steel products in the emerging and developing countries. Final tests will be performed soon, with the steelmaking plant in full islanded configuration
